Because 70% of our immune system is found in our digestive tracts, the foods that we eat and the chemicals that they contain can have a significant impact on our health.
As these chemicals in foods work through a child's digestive system, they can corrode his or her "pipes" in much the same way that chemical toxins corrode plumbing! This "chemical corrosion" of the digestive tract can leave a child vulnerable to a host of auto-immune disorders, including allergies, asthma, Celiac's disease and other conditions.
Because of the risks that these chemicals may present, mothers in most developed countries are advised to avoid exposure to chemical toxins during the first twelve weeks of pregnancy given the role that these toxins play in the development of:
- autism
- allergies
- asthma
- ADHD
- gestational diabetes.
A mother's exposure to pesticide during pregnancy has been linked to both:
Avoiding Chemical Toxins in Your Diet
-
Ten years ago, in 1996, scientists introduced chemical toxins into seeds, due to growing concern over the spraying of industrial pesticides.
-
Today, soy, corn, cotton and canola contain these toxins within the seeds themselves
-
91% of all soy now contains these toxins
-
At least 60% of all corn contains these toxins
-
75% of processed foods contain unlabeled genetically engineered, chemical toxins that have never been proven safe for a child
- By law, a product labeled "USDA Organic" is not allowed to contain these chemically and genetically engineered toxins.
A simple step that a pregnant mother can take during her pregnancy to avoid these hidden toxins and chemicals in her diet is to avoid processed foods, conventional soy and conventional corn ingredients (like high fructose corn syrup which is banned in children's foods in most developed countries).
As mothers in other developed countries are advised to "go organic" during the first twelve weeks of pregnancy, AllergyKids believes that mothers in the US may want to seek the advise of their medical experts and learn more about this simple proactive step to avoid hidden toxins in our foods in the hopes of protecting the health of our unborn children.
Soy Formula's Role in the Peanut Allergy
Additionally, recent studies out of the University of London highlight the role that conventional soy (and soy formula) play in the development of the peanut allergy.
As a result of these studies, the British Dietetic Association advises parents to avoid exposing infants under the age of one to soy. In France, parents are advised to avoid soy for children 0-3 years of age given the risk that it may present.
As the first independently funded research organization, we have sought the expertise and advice of leading pediatric specialists with the highest integrity whose only interests are in protecting the health and well-being of our children.
Corn's Role in Ethanol and Its Impact on the Allergy Epidemic
Today, corn is not only grown for food but also grown to meet biodiesel and ethanol demand. To address this soaring demand, corn has recently been engineered to produce its own insecticidal toxins to achieve greater crop yields. The toxins that are now engineered into corn are designed to cause gut paralysis and death in the insects that consume this corn.
Given that our own children are also consuming this corn, AllergyKids is concerned with the risks that this presents to the gastrointestinal tracts of developing infants and children.
In order to avoid this genetically and chemically engineered corn, AllergyKids advises families to try to avoid conventional corn and corn ingredients (i.e. high fructose corn syrup), given that these corn ingredients have been banned in developed countries around the world after previously undisclosed research (Seralini Paper: 2006) showed liver and kidney toxicity in a 90-day animal feeding trial.
By law, corn products that are labeled "USDA Organic" are not allowed to contain these toxins.
Our Children
According to the Centers for Disease Control, one out of every three Caucasian children born in the year 2000 (this year's second graders) are expected to develop diabetes in their lifetime, with the number increasing to one out of every two Hispanic/African American children.
The CDC expects 45% of children to be insulin dependent within ten years.
According to the CDC, one out of every ten cases of breast cancer is linked to a genetic cause, suggesting that 9 out of every 10 cases of breast cancer could be prevented by addressing environmetal and dietary toxins.
At AllergyKids, we are focused on the role that the recent introduction of environmental toxins plays in the health of our children.
The AllergyKids' Medical Advisory Team includes:
Dr. Bob Sears: "Dr. Sears" is one of the most trusted names in pediatrics. Dr. Bob Sears, along with his remarkable family, co-authored The Baby Book, The Pregnancy Book, and How to Raise the Healthiest Kid on the Block. His refreshingly candid advice on the dangers that chemical additives in children's foods present to their health and well-being (as seen in our June 2007 Newsletter) is a gift for which we are extremely grateful.
Dr. Kenneth Bock: If you have ever been concerned about allergies, asthma, ADHD or autism, then you recognize the critical role that the research of Dr. Kenneth Bock plays in the life of our children. His work on "the 4-A’s" highlights the important role that diet can play in tackling these autoimmune disorders, and the risks that recently introduced neurotoxins in foods may present to the health of our children. His recent appearance on the CBS Early Show demonstrates his intelligence and compassion.
Dr. David Ludwig: The integrity of Dr. Ludwig’s research has earned him a place of honor at the AllergyKids’ table (not to mention that he insists that no junk be served!). Dr. Ludwig refuses industry funding, as research highlights the influential role that that industry funding plays in skewing scientific results. Dr. Ludwig's work focuses on the risks that junk food present to the health our children, as seen in Ending the Food Fight.
