I have both a 23 year old and a 6 year old daughter. My first, Brittany, showed signs of a dairy allergy from birth. I couldn’t nurse so we went through a host of formulas, all of which only came right back up. A friend recommended goats milk and she did fine on that.
Being a young mother I had no idea it was a dairy allergy. I just thought it was the formula and nobody suggested otherwise. So as she grew I gave her other dairy products and ultimately GMOs beginning in 1996 as far as I can tell.
By the time she was 20 she had suffered a whole host of what I now recognize as symptoms. She experienced everything from her eyes swelling shut and frequent fibromyalgia symptoms to kidney stones and even gall stones. She was 20 when she had her gallbladder removed. I finally talked her into getting her allergies tested. We had blood tests done and low and behold she’s allergic to practically everything!! The list is so extensive.
So that got me thinking, hmmm my 6 year, Mahrya, has mild to moderate asthma and I was being bullied by her doctors to use steroid inhalers, which in my opinion didn’t work.
So I figured I should have her allergies tested as well.
My assumption was that we’d been mostly organic for nearly 1 1/2 years and her tests would be fine.
Boy was I mistaken! The tests were just as bad, if not worse that Brittany’s.
I had all ready done a lot of research on the food supply and knew that there were allergies and other apparent health problems appearing as a result of this infiltration of foreign organisms.
We’re going on 3 years organic now and although I haven’t had her retested, she no longer has asthma symptoms and even her behavior has improved remarkably since we completely removed GMOs.
It is also relevant to note that my best friend and I went organic originally to feed our children better, we had no idea what would follow.
She lost 100 lbs in the first 4 months and another 50 in the 3 months following.
I personally lost 40 lbs in 3 months. The transformation was unbelievable!
The only thing we did was transition from a conventional diet to a mostly organic diet. We didn’t increase physical activity, nor did we give up any favorites. We merely replaced them with organic alternatives and cooking ingredients.
My daughter Brittany is another story. She uninterested in learning about GMOs or the changes in the food supply and my words only result in that glazed, there’s nobody home look. Her and her husband have constant health issues. He just had bladder cancer. Only now she’s feeding my 2 yr. old grandson and like so many Moms, she has no idea what damage she’s doing.
Currently, I’m attending the Institute for Integrative Nutrition and I will be a certified health counselor this year. The knowledge I’ve gained about the food supply in the past 3 years has changed my entire life. Like you said, once you start looking you can’t stop and you can’t unlearn it.
I’m looking forward to helping mothers and children clean out and detoxify their diets. I can’t wait for the results! I plan to educate families about GMOs and other toxic ingredients. I can share all my tips and tricks for being organic on a budget.
Being a single mom with a limited income, I’ve learned some valuable lessons.
For some reason I’m oddly surprised when I talk to people that still don’t know what GMO means. But It’s not something they talk about on television. And people are reluctant and sensitive with regard to talking about their eating habits. Change scares them. But I think if they knew, really knew, what they were feeding their children and the risks involved, they wouldn’t do it.
Thank you for allowing me to share my story. I appreciate your dedication and efforts in this very important matter of children’s health. I am so on your team!!
